Wilkswood Roots Reggae 2019 sees an exciting debut appearance on the DJ Derek Stage from a music scene stalwart, Dave Bimble.
Long before playing bass guitar with ska punk heroes, The Sporadics, Bimble was a featured roots and culture deejay spinning on the free party scene; initially with the notorious sound system legends WDA (Bournemouth), then later for homegrown heroes Dreadloss Sound System (Brighton). The latter quickly evolved into the Free Radical Sounds record label and webzine and although short lived, the label released the critically acclaimed compilations: ‘Twenty First Century Ska’, ‘Garage Dubs’ and ‘Nu Shoots Inna Roots – Vocal and Dub Versions’ during its brief tenure. Vinyl editions of these releases, pressed on heavyweight double and triple 12 inch, are now very sought after recordings.
Bimble was always the label’s Roots man and was a very active selector at free parties, festivals and club all-nighters. He also held a residency on Brighton’s underground station Radio 4A and his ‘Champion Sound’ monthly radio show was broadcast for almost six years where he promoted the latest Roots and Dubwise releases. He formed close alliances with many of the UK’s top selectors and producers, which included Adrian Sherwood, On U Sound, Zion Train and The Disciples.
After leaving Brighton and returning to Bournemouth, Bimble enjoyed a run as a resident selector at the legendary Dubnium nights and also supported local heroes, Dubheart. Fast forward to today, and when he isn’t on a festival stage or at memorable gigs with The Sporadics, Bimble can be found digging those crates and pulling out corkers at his pop-up record shop in the countryside surrounding Bristol.
